On December 20, 2006, the General Assembly of the United Nations decided to proclaim 2011 as International Year of Forests to recognize that forests and sustainable forest management can contribute enormously to sustainable developmentwith poverty eradication and to achieve the millennium development goals. Preservingforests is synonymous with protecting life. They are being threatened worldwide byuncontrolled degradation because they have diverted its use to the growing needs ofthe human being and the lack of an adequate environmental management. Forests arethe richest in plant and animal species. Their destruction causes soil erosion, degradation of watershed areas, losses in animal life (when their habitat is destroyed, the animals die) and loss of biodiversity.
